Theme 2: Specific Solution Common Problem
In this theme we will look at offering solutions. There will be one assignment related to this section.
We will start with a common problem: maintaining a balanced diet. A diet lacking in the proper nutrition is a typical situation with clients. Two of the most frequent barriers are lack of information and time constraints. You may have many clients who want to eat a healthier diet, but just don’t know how. So as a result, they settle for easy or quick solutions. As a health coach you have the nutrition information they need and can provide strategies to incorporate it into their lifestyles. To ease into health coaching in action, we will focus on one component of a healthy diet. We will start with the most important meal of the day, which is breakfast.
Many clients don’t realize that starting their day with the proper nutrition has a significant effect on the rest of their day. “Without eating breakfast, you’re more vulnerable to cravings and less likely to make healthy choices in the morning and throughout the day,” says Kraus. That’s a disaster — whether you’re on a diet or just eating for good health (Davis, 2009).”
Breakfast is your first meal after an extended interval of no nutritional input. The time between dinner or your evening snack and breakfast could be well over eight hours. Skipping that meal puts the body in a deficit. Also, choosing the wrong foods is just as harmful. The body needs a refuel of the right nutrients for performing the tasks it will engage in until its next meal. The brain needs nutrients to function properly, especially to focus. People skip breakfast for a variety of reasons. Some think it will help them lose weight. Others blame a lack of time in the morning to prepare a meal.
In our first assignment we will provide a week of breakfast options for two clients. Go to the Assignment 1 page for details of the assignment.
